Skipper T-Shirt

Black Jazz Records was founded in Los Angeles, California around 1969. It was co-owned by Gene Russell and the label’s focus was to promote the talents of young, African-American jazz musicians. Between 1971 and 1975, about 20 albums were released. Among those albums was a very popular album titled simply “henry franklin – the skipper”.

The Skipper T is a nod to this great album pictured below as well as the record label.

The Skipper LP
Please note that although these LPs have been re-issued around 2012 under the Japanese record label Snow Dog Records, and now under the label Real Gone Music, the artists see none of those proceeds. All of these albums are fantastic in their own rights featuring outstanding musicians including: Doug and Jean Carn, Gene Russell, Chester Thompson, Calvin Keys, Ken Chaney, Rudolph Johnson, Kellee Patterson, Walter Bishop Jr., and Henry Franklin. So, please support these artists!
